Can I get credit for my internship?

Business students at Appalachian can earn class credit for completing an internship that meets the required criteria. In order to receive class credit for your internship, you must be:

  • a Junior
  • accepted into the Walker College of Business
  • in good academic standing
  • completing a 40 hour per week internship that lasts at least 10 weeks (for 6 hour internships)
  • completing an internship in your major
  • completing an internship that fits within the summer session date range: May 4, 2017 - August 14, 2017. (Additional paperwork may allow for your internship to qualify with slightly different dates.)

You must also meet with your internship advisor Internship Advisor List (PDF) and fill out an internship contract. You can use the Internship Checksheet (PDF) to make sure that you're meeting all the requirements and following the steps to get class credit.

Your contract must be turned in to the BB&T Student Leadership Center at least three business days prior to your start date. You must be registered for your internship before you begin working. The last day to turn in an internship contract is by 12 noon on May 31, 2017. Contracts must include an Internship Contract Cover Sheet (PDF).

For International internships, students must complete online forms at OIED's website. Students must meet with OIED at least three weeks prior to their departure date or before the Drop/Add deadline (whichever comes first) in order to complete OIED requirements.

Can I take courses during an internship?

Students may not register for an internship and additional coursework without permission from the faculty internship advisor and the internship supervisor. In order to take coursework during an internship, you must meet the University requirements (PDF).

State Authorization: A new federal law limits a University's ability to send students out-of-state while earning class credit. Based on this new law, students may not complete internships for credit in: Kansas, Kentucky, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, West Virginia. Some other states have restrictions as well. Please stop by for drop-ins Monday-Thursday from 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm or talk to your internship advisor if you hope to complete an internship out-of-state.
